ZAGA Course April 2021 by Dr. Aparicio: a revamp comeback
After more than one year of online events due to the COVID 19 pandemic, we were back in the lecture room with the ZAGA Course April 2021 edition.
During this first course of the year, we had the opportunity to spend three days that allowed Doctors from all around the world to discover and share the ZAGA Concept. A complete journey throughout the theory, the practice on 3D Biomodels, and on the third day, hands-on training on cryopreserved heads to learn about implant positioning, prosthetic rehabilitation, and anatomic setups to adapt to each case.
Zygomatic Implant ZAGA Course by Dr. Aparicio.
Theory to hands-on practice.
New Straumann ZAGA Round and ZAGA Flat zygomatic implants for hands-on practice
The course led by Dr. Carlos Aparicio has given the specialists the occasion to use for the first time the new zygomatic implants Straumann-ZAGA Flat and Straumann-ZAGA Round. The implants designed by Dr. Carlos Aparicio in collaboration with a renewed team of engineers perfectly combine with the ZAGA Concept.
Already published and mentioned in several peer-reviewed scientific publications, the StraumannⓇ zygomatic implant system composed of the ZAGA Flat and ZAGA Round models represents a breakthrough in product design and a definite answer for the product-need fit in the field of zygomatic implant rehabilitation. Adapting the implant design to each patient’s anatomy is critical to reaching clinical success and patient satisfaction, or should we say happiness with a new smile, free of complications.
The surgeons who participated in ZAGA Course, April 2021 edition had the opportunity to appreciate the unique design and adaptability of the implants by using them in the 3D models’ hands-on sessions.
A complete journey: from planning to surgery
During the first two days, the Course took place at Torre Glories, one of the landmarks of Barcelona.
The first day was dedicated to the ZAGA Philosophy and other existing techniques for placing zygomatic implants to compare them to prevent complications such as sinusitis. The second day was reserved for the lecture about the success criteria in zygomatic implants and preventing complications. The participants also had the chance to perform a hands-on session with 3D models printed from the actual CT scans of the donors.
The course is an entire journey through the ZAGA concept. After the two first days of theory and hands-on 3D models, the participants could perform the surgery on the cryopreserved cadavers on Friday morning.
Moreover, for this edition, we had a special guest Dr Rubén Davó who accepted our invitation to be one of the main speakers in the ZAGA Proficient Course June edition and Dr Aparicio.
An on-site course, as usual
Each edition of the course is unique, as we get to know each other for 3 days of learning how to deliver the best solution for each patient. We count on highly international participation, making this course a reference worldwide in the zygomatic implants field.
The course was conducted in large spaces to comply with health care delivery, respecting safety measures and barrier gestures. All the participants and staff coming from worldwide got a PCR test on-site to minimize the risks.
We are pleased to announce that one month after the course, no COVID-19 infections were detected, and health deliveries were met!

“EXCELLENT COURSE! NEW CONCEPTS, NEW IDEAS!”
This course’s hands-on practice was dynamic and interactive. Both the critical opinion leaders Dr Carlos Aparicio and Dr Rubén Davó were able to explain the details to the participants on how to improve their technique by answering their questions and opening an exciting debate. Indeed, Dr Miljan Micunovic from Montenegro was impressed, saying: “Surprised and charmed with the approachability of Prof Carlos.“
Dr Carlos Aparicio presented the ZAGA Concept and the new advances in the technique in detail, including the new Straumann zygomatic implant system. After three days of full enriching lectures and helpful practices, Dr Jercan Nicolae from Romania expressed his satisfaction “Excellent course! new concept, new ideas”.
For most of them, these days represented the opportunity to know the ZAGA Concept better and to understand how they can improve their surgical skills. For example, Dr José Manuel Orgaz from Spain said about the course: “Exciting course. I recommended it. I have enjoyed the Professional Speakers, and of course, I’m going to start with the ZAGA method. “
Also, Dr Julio Alvarez was totally amazed by the ZAGA Course, exclaiming: “Difficult to improve, excellent course.”
