The recently concluded ZAGA Cadaver Course in Barcelona, from January 21st to 24th, 2025, delivered an unparalleled educational experience in zygomatic and pterygoid implants, overall rated by the participants with a 9,7/10.

Led by Dr. Carlos Aparicio, the founder of the ZAGA method and philosophy, and featuring a distinguished faculty including Dr. Adi Lorean (ZAGA Center Tel Aviv), Prof. Waldemar Polido (ZAGA Partner Indianapolis), Dr. Luc Vrielinck (ZAGA Partner Genk), and Prof. Pedro Clarós (Otorhinolaryngologist and expert in facial plastic surgery), this four-day intensive course was held at the World Trade Center, an exclusive location in the heart of the city. The immersive educational experience was focused on complex surgical techniques based on the renowned Zygoma Anatomy-Guided Approach (ZAGA), complemented by a comprehensive theoretical and practical module on pterygoid implants.

Speakers: Dr. Luc Vrielinck, Dr. Carlos Aparicio, Dr. Adi Lorean, and Prof. Waldemar Polido

We are deeply grateful for the generous support of our partners: Straumann, Bontempi, Dental 3D Models, and Bien-Air. Their collaboration provided participants with the unique opportunity to refine their skills in dental implant placement, utilizing top-tier Straumann implants in hands-on sessions with 3D models, supplied by Dental 3D Models, and cadavers.

Day 1: Introduction to the ZAGA Method and Initial Practice

The first day of the course at the World Trade Center in Barcelona began with a warm welcome and general guidelines provided by Dr. Aparicio, who introduced participants to the approach and philosophy of the ZAGA method. The day continued with a detailed introduction to the Straumann-ZAGA implant system, followed by a practical session where participants could apply what they had learned through dental 3D models.

Day 2: Tissue Management and Clinical Complications

The second day focused on soft tissue management, a key aspect of the success of zygomatic implants. Later, Dr. Vrielinck shared his experience regarding potential complications that may arise in clinical practice and how to address them effectively. As the previous day, the session concluded with a hands-on workshop using 3D models, allowing attendees to refine their skills in a controlled environment.

Day 3: Applied Anatomy and Advanced Implants

On the third day, Prof. Clarós delivered a keynote lecture on the paranasal sinuses, providing essential information about their anatomy and their relationship with zygomatic implants. Subsequently, Dr. Lorean led a specialized session on the placement of pterygoid implants. The day included, again, an intensive hands-on session with 3D models to apply the acquired concepts. Finally, the day ended with a session on the ORIS criteria, which are fundamental for evaluating and planning clinical cases. In the evening, participants enjoyed a social event and the diploma ceremony at the Mirabé restaurant, an ideal setting for networking and sharing experiences among colleagues.

Day 4: Practice with Cryopreserved Heads

The final day of the course took place at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, where participants performed hands-on practice with cryopreserved heads. This was a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge in a realistic setting and perfect their surgical techniques in zygomatic and pterygoid implants.

The session concluded with the final remarks and a book signing of “Advanced Zygomatic Implants” by Dr. Carlos Aparicio. Participants had the chance to contribute to the ZAGA Social program, an initiative designed to help edentulous patients overcome financial barriers to zygomatic rehabilitation while also supporting dental students eager to learn zygomatic implant techniques by buying the book. We are deeply grateful to Drs. Carmy Michael, Amir Guorgui, Orhan Haililli, Tonea Ovidiu, Jorge B Manci, Michael Gu, Luc Vrielink, Chang Cheng Tai, and Referendaru Dan for their incredible generosity. Together, they raised 1934€, directly supporting patients in need and advancing the mission of the ZAGA Social program.
