ZAGA Scientific Partner Valencia
University of Valencia
Under the guidance of Prof Miguel Peñarrocha, a renowned zygomatic implant expert, the prestigious University of Valencia became a ZAGA Scientific Partner in Valencia in May 2020. The University provides scientific and academic support. They work on research activities regarding treating severe maxillary atrophy using zygomatic implants via the ZAGA philosophy.
About Prof Miguel Peñarrocha
Prof Miguel Peñarrocha is internationally-recognized for his extensive publications on oral and zygomatic implants. He is a Professor and the Chairman of the Oral Surgery Department Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He also leads the research activities regarding treating severe maxillary atrophy using zygomatic implants via the ZAGA philosophy.
Zygomatic implant research at the University of Valencia
The oral surgery department chaired by Prof Peñarrocha has published on zygomatic rehabilitation since 2004, starting with clinical reports on the severely atrophic maxilla. Later papers described the sinus slot technique (2006) and reviewed zygomatic implants in the resorbed maxilla (2007). A 2016 study from the group measured how the length of the prosthetic arm, which depends on how far palatally the implant head emerges, affects patient satisfaction. The ZAGA Concept deals with the same problem by adapting the implant path to each patient’s anatomy, so the head emerges close to the alveolar crest.
What the partnership adds to the ZAGA network
As a ZAGA Scientific Partner, the University of Valencia gives the network academic support for research on severe maxillary atrophy. Network clinicians who want to turn their own cases into a study can work with a university department that has published in this field for two decades. Centres that want help writing up their results can also use the ZAGA Scientific Publication Support Program. The research behind the method is summarised on the ZAGA science page.
